Horses and romance

Good read

A common-sense, practical guide to research. Many may feel that the last thing they need when starting a programme of research or a graduate research degree is another book to read. Accordingly this book is short, to the point, has cartoons, and warns of most of the pitfalls that the novice researcher may fall into.

Comfortable

Who controls reality?Soldier of 'Tween is filled with fascinating aliens and cultures. It delves into the nature of reality as Five-Red slowly uncovers the secrets of 'Tween. The only annoyance is that Five-Red's future and his importance are clearly shown way before the end of the volume, and instead of slowly and gracefully being led into discovering his destiny Five-Red is thrust into his role by other characters. (Though some readers may well enjoy such a technique.) Soldier of 'Tween is a quite enjoyable book reminiscent of old-time science fiction novels both in plot and writing style.

A bilingual collection from a language-conscious poetThe book as a whole has a sad, thoughtful tone, but I found it ultimately hopeful. A number of poems are about loneliness and the desire for love. Consider the quote, "could it be I'm the last person / on the face of the earth?" (XXII). Some poems have a political edge; in one he asks "how much for Central American coffee / that hums with bullet-ridden blood?" (XX).
I found the strongest poems in the collection to be a trio that deal with words and language. In one of these three Alarcon writes that "beneath this language there's another, / more ancient, agile, elusive" (XVI). He seems to be pointing towards an ur-language that transcends language. Overall, a solid collection by an important Latino poet of the United States.

Exquisite Stylistic Golf BookEven if you have to pay a little, this book is worth it! Magnificent, unique illustrations by world renown impressionist Ray Ellis! I love his shot of the "Practice Area at Augusta." His watercolors of renown courses and other golf sketches are just fantastic! You won't see much like them elsewhere and some are available to purchase, at some galleries and from his website.
Added to this great art is commentary by Ben Wright and a great Intro written by that dean of golf writers, Herbert Warren Wind.
Great addition to golf afficiando!

A good book for oral and maxillofacial surgeons
